PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY en
Description
Scope of Psychopharmacology. An introduction to pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. A brief report to functional neuroanatomy, neurotransmitter systems and chemical communication. Drugs that are used for the treatment of anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Psychopharmacology of alcohol. Psychomotor stimulants: cocaine and amphetamines.
Learning outcomes
After successfully completing this class, students are expected to
1. demonstrate an understanding of the general principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.
2. demonstrate knowledge of the neurochemical substrate of mood disorders (e.g., depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia) and the mechanism of action of related psychotropic agents.
3. have acquired an understanding of the mechanisms of actions of drugs of abuse (e.g., alcohol, cocaine, amphetamines).
4. recognize the names and categories of the most commonly used psychotropic agents, and discuss their side effects as well as drug usage limitations.
