courseContent en
The first half of the lectures give an introduction to European literature from the Middle Ages to 1700 concentrating on a specific periods, genres or poetical devices. The most important works of the period are analyzed and contextualized. The historical changes of literary genres, the uses of topoi and formal conventions are also demonstrated. This basic knowledge helps students to understand the European context of Hungarian literature, and to create a literary historical narrative of Europe. The reuse of classical heritage as well as the newly emerged literary forms of vernacular literatures, sometimes surviving till nowadays, are in the focus of the lectures. The second half of the lectures focuses on the most important epochs, authors and texts of European and American world literature in the 18-19th century. The course pays special attention to the peculiarities of national, regional and, if applicable, minority literature, as well as to the historical approaches of their genre and traditions. The student is be able to perceive the broadest literary-historical contexts. The student is able to compare the most peculiar literary phenomena of national literatures with each other on an elementary level, and is able to recognize the similarities and differences between in Hungarian and European literature.
