BIOPSYCHOLOGY I en
Description
Scope of biopsychology and its relation to other disciplines of psychology. The history of research on the brain and behavior. General layout of the nervous system. The major structures of the brain and functions they mediate. Types of cells of the nervous system, generation and transmission of neural signals. Principles of sensory system organization. Mechanisms of perception: vision, hearing, chemical senses (taste and smell), somatosensation (touch and pain).
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students are expected to

1. have acquired a basic understanding of the nervous system anatomy
2. have understood the main principles of the nervous system’s functioning and neural communication
3. have been familiarized with the main experimental methods to study the central nervous system
4. have acquired an introductory knowledge of the way physical information (sensory experience) is processed by the brain creating the perception of vision, sound, taste, smell, touch and pain
