INTERGROUP RELATIONS AND THE SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY OF RACISM en
Description
The course includes a review of social psychological theorizing and research on prejudice and racism and aims at the familiarization of students with the social implications of various social psychological approaches to intergroup relations. It includes two-hour theoretical lectures on the following subjects:
•Introduction of the concept of prejudice in social psychology and attempts to measure it
•The Social cognition perspective
•Psychodynamic approaches
•Approaches based on Social Identity Theory
•Theories of 'new racism'
•Discursive Psychology and the analysis of racist discourse
•ideological dilemmas and Rhetoric
In addition, the course includes hourly workshops in which various research methods to the study of racism and The course constitutes a review of social psychological theory and research on prejudice and racism and their applications in the field of intergroup relations. It includes two-hour theoretical lectures on the following subjects:
• Introduction of the concept of prejudice in social psychology and attempts to measure it
• The Social cognition perspective of prejudice and stereotyping
• Psychodynamic approaches to racism
• Ingroup bias and Social Identity Theory
• Intergroup conflict and self-categorization
• Theories of 'new racism'
• Intergroup strategies and acculturation
• Discursive Psychology and the analysis of racist discourse
• Ideological dilemmas and Rhetoric
In addition, the course includes hourly workshops in which various research methods to the study of racism and intergroup relations (stereotype research, attitude scales, analysis of racist discourse) are comparatively examined and their potential contribution is evaluated. Students are invited to make research proposals and to use in practice specific methods of data collection and analysis.
Learning outcomes
Having completed the course sucessfully, students:
-will be familiar with various social psychological explanations of racism and intergroup relations.
-will understand current intergroup phenomena and make links between them and social psychological theories
-will be trained in social psychological research methods used in the study of prejudice, racism and intergroup relations.
-will be trained to write short scientific research proposals and reports on intergroup relations and conflicts
